Paul-Heinz Dittrich

Born in 1930 in Gornsdorf/Germany, he studied at the Academy of Music in Leipzig from 1951 to 1956 and from 1958 to 1960 as a master student of Rudolf Wagner-Régeny at the German Academy of Arts in Berlin. From 1960 to 1976, he taught composition, ear training, counterpoint and theory of form at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music. From 1976 to 1990 he worked as a freelance composer. In 1978 he became a professor of composition and worked as a visiting professor in Freiburg/Breisgau, Los Angeles, Paris and Cologne. From 1983 to 1991, he was a master student at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. In 1981 and 1987, Dittrich was scholar in residence at the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio/Italy.
From 1990 to 2002, Dittrich was Professor of Composition at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. During this period, he also worked as a visiting professor at Daegu University/South Korea, at the Samuel Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv and at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem/Israel, as well as in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
Dittrich has worked in various electronic studios: in Switzerland, Warsaw, Cologne and at IRCAM in Paris.
In 1991, Dittrich founded the Brandenburg Colloquium for New Music and served as its artistic director until 2000.
Paul-Heinz Dittrich was a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin and the Sächsische Akademie der Künste Dresden.
His compositions include works from various genres: Music for solo instruments, instrumental and vocal chamber music, music with live electronics, scenic chamber music, orchestral works. His compositions have been performed in many European countries, the USA and Asia.
The composer Paul-Heinz Dittrich died on 28.12.2020 in Zeuthen.
